It starts as a simple walk with a dog, but the sea seems to become menacing and the walker has to flee before getting caught. After reading <a href=\"https:\/\/redheadwithabrain.ch\/index.php\/2024\/01\/24\/started-early-took-my-dog-kate-atkinson-2010\/\">Kate Atkinson&#8217;s novel<\/a>, which refers to this poem in its title and throughout the book, I had to read it. I was not at all familiar with Emily Dickinson&#8217;s writing and read also the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.poetryfoundation.org\/articles\/69411\/emily-dickinson-i-started-early-took-my-dog-\">poem guide<\/a>, which opened a new world to me. I will surely read more Dickinson.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>&#8220;I started Early \u2013 Took my Dog \u2013<br>And visited the Sea \u2013<br>The Mermaids in the&nbsp;Basement<br>Came out to look at me \u2013<\/em><br><br><em>And&nbsp;Frigates&nbsp;\u2013 in the Upper Floor<br>Extended&nbsp;Hempen Hands&nbsp;\u2013<br>Presuming Me to be a Mouse \u2013<br>Aground \u2013&nbsp;opon&nbsp;the Sands \u2013<br><br>But no Man moved Me \u2013 till the Tide<br>Went past my simple Shoe \u2013<br>And past my Apron \u2013 and my Belt<br>And past my&nbsp;Boddice&nbsp;\u2013 too \u2013<\/em><br><br><em>And made as He would eat me up \u2013<br>As wholly as a Dew<br>Opon a Dandelion&#8217;s Sleeve \u2013<br>And then \u2013 I started \u2013 too \u2013<br><br>And He \u2013 He followed \u2013 close behind \u2013<br>I felt His Silver Heel<br>Opon my Ancle \u2013 Then My Shoes<br>Would overflow with Pearl<br><br>Until We met the Solid Town \u2013<br>No One He seemed to know \u2013<br>And bowing \u2013 with a Mighty look \u2013<br>At me \u2013 The Sea withdrew \u2013&#8221;<\/em><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A poem about the sea in four-line stanzas, like a song.
