Philip is initially suspicious, but he falls in love with Rachel and gives her the Ashley estate. But people still have doubts about Rachel’s intentions and past, especially about how much money she has and whether she might have been involved in Ambrose’s death. Philip is again unsure. Rachel’s character remains ambiguous throughout the novel, challenging feelings of trust and obsession in Philip. This is an intricate and emotionally charged tale that is bound to end badly.
