Mary and Matthew’s wedding is overshadowed by family troubles, including a ruined fortune from a disastrous railway investment and Edith’s romance ending at the altar. Bates narrowly escapes danger in prison, and Mrs Hughes faces a cancer scare. Tom Branson and Lady Sybil return under suspicion of implication in the fire of an Anglo-Irish aristocrat’s house. Matthew gains a say in the estate, but tragedy strikes when Sybil dies in childbirth. The series ends with Matthew’s death in a car crash, just as Mary returns with her newborn heir. This series is an interesting look at the post-war period, where identities and social roles are questioned in a rapidly changing society. I am still fascinated by the Britishness of this series and love watching these episodes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
