Romantic entanglements continue: Rose defies her family’s opposition to become engaged to Atticus, Isobel ends a proposed marriage due to class prejudice, and Tom plans a new life in America with Sybbie. Meanwhile, Mrs Patmore and Carson consider achieving financial independence. The season ends on a note of love and renewal when Carson proposes to Mrs Hughes. It took a long time for this to happen.
