As well as watching over a jewellery factory in Turtle Mountain, he also keeps an eye on his Chippewa community. A US politician has introduced a bill to terminate the treaties with the Native American tribes, which would strip them of their rights and land. Alongside this struggle, the story mainly follows Patrice, a young woman searching for her sister and love. The story is based on letters from Erdrich’s grandfather and historical facts about the termination bill. The author concludes that 113 tribal nations suffered the disaster of termination, with not one tribe profiting. Subsequently, 78 tribal nations regained federal recognition, 10 gained state recognition but not federal, 31 are landless and 24 are considered extinct. Reading this book was a magical experience for me. As well as learning more about how these tribes were treated, I immersed myself in the writing, which was so delicate and precious, and I really felt the kindness and suffering of the characters. This book and author were a great discovery for me.

“Patrice had come to think that humans treated the concept of God, or Gizhe Manidoo, or the Holy Ghost, in a childish way. She had felt the movement of something vaster, impersonal yet personal, in her life. She thought that maybe people in contact with that nameless greatness had a way of catching at the edges, a way of being pulled along or even entering this thing beyond experience.”

Thomas Wazhask is the watchman in this story.
