Donna Leon is an American author who has written a series of crime novels. These novels take place in Venice and feature her hero Commissario Guido Brunetti. She has written another novel and a few non-fiction books, but I only attempt to keep up with her crime novels.
Commissario Guido Burnetti is not the typical policeman of crime novels. He is this intelligent, good guy that tries to act as a pragmatic policeman in this city where corruption is everywhere. He is stably married to Paola, a university lecturer, who comes from a rich traditional Venetian family. They have two children, Raffaele and Chiara. Brunetti is well-read and the novels are full of references to ancient Greek and Latin literature.
I love these books because of the descriptions of Venice, for all the references to Italian food and to Italian lifestyle.
