RISD stands for Rhode Island School of Design, a college that “equips artists, designers and scholars to generate and challenge the ideas that shape our world… by cultivating expansive and elastic thinking”. The school has a museum, that offers a wide range of art, from ancient Egyptian, Roman and Chinese art to modern contemporary art, through the Impressionists to the Charles Pendleton House of 18th and 19th century American art. Two interesting temporary exhibitions: The Art of French Wallpaper Design, amazing to see how woodblock printing was used to create these wallpapers, and Art and Design from 1900 to Now with a sculpture by Simone Leigh, for once quite small, but always as beautiful. A small museum with many periods of art. Well worth a visit.
“The RISD Museum houses approximately 100,000 works of fine and decorative art ranging from ancient times to the present. The only comprehensive art museum in southeastern New England, it is a vital resource for RISD and the broader community.”
