Set in 1924, these episodes explore family secrets, social tensions and personal growth, as usual. Violet discovers that Marigold is Edith’s daughter; Edith inherits Michael Gregson’s publishing business and takes Marigold back from the Drewes. Violet also helps a former lover reunite with his estranged wife. Meanwhile, Anna is briefly arrested for Green’s murder, but she and Bates are later cleared. Romantic entanglements continue: Rose defies her family’s opposition to become engaged to Atticus, Isobel ends a proposed marriage due to class prejudice, and Tom plans a new life in America with Sybbie. Meanwhile, Mrs Patmore and Carson consider achieving financial independence. The season ends on a note of love and renewal when Carson proposes to Mrs Hughes. It took a long time for this to happen. I am still enthralled by the fifth season. Only one more to go !
