Because naming things makes them less scary, Fran decides to name them: the kappa, the black dog, the golem, the bannik, and many others. She introduces each one with a clear description of what they are and why they can be dangerous. In between these monster sections, we follow Fran’s life and her relationships with her friends, her grandmother, and her father. The monster drawings are made with a simple fine liner, while the parts about Fran’s life use graphite pencil. Both styles are beautiful and work really well together. There is a lot to learn from the illustrations, especially for anyone interested in drawing. It is also a very interesting and amusing book about monsters and folklore.
