These short stories were written by Daphne du Maurier when she was very young, before the novels that we all know and made her famous. Most of these stories already include the themes that she loves : identity, love, mystery, weirdness, and this little twist at the end of the story. “The Doll” is incredibly eerie and made me feel somewhat ill at ease. Nothing seems to go quite right in any of these short stories. An enjoyable read for those who like Daphne du Maurier.

“So being grown up is this: a sordid tissue of intimate relationships, complicated and vile. No loveliness, no romance.”
