Four children locked up in an attic, hidden, waiting for their grandfather to die. Locked up for more than three years, slowly being poisoned by their beloved mother. There is also a horribly inhuman grandmother that takes out a whip when needed and has a wide array of other cruelties, physical and psychological. This book goes through themes like incest, viciousness, family secrets, revenge and betrayal. Loads of reviews are very enthusiastic about this novel, but I found it dark and disturbing, not at ease with the story at all.

“Death wasn’t the only thing that took away someone you loved and needed; I knew that now.”
