This story is set in Cornwall and follows the ambiguous relationship between Philip Ashley and his cousin Rachel, who is the widow of Philip’s guardian and cousin Ambrose. Philip is initially suspicious, but he falls in love with Rachel and gives her the Ashley estate. But people still have doubts about Rachel’s intentions and past, especially about how much money she has and whether she might have been involved in Ambrose’s death. Philip is again unsure. Rachel’s character remains ambiguous throughout the novel, challenging feelings of trust and obsession in Philip. This is an intricate and emotionally charged tale that is bound to end badly. Very well-written and enthralling.

“There are some women, Philip, good women very possibly, who through no fault of their own impel disaster. Whatever they touch, somehow turns to tragedy.”
