Set in Kobe, this film tells the story of two orphaned siblings, Seita and Setsuko, and their fight to survive during the final months of the Pacific War in September 1945. The story is based on Akiyuki Nosaka’s semi-autobiographical short story. It is a heartbreaking film. We watched it together as a family and were completely mesmerised and speechless when it finished. It is very sad, and still very close to today’s reality, given what is going on around the world.
