House returns for a second season, and I find him even crueler and more heartless than in the first – which is saying something. He remains a brilliant diagnostician, hopelessly addicted to Vicodin, and continues to push ethical and professional boundaries without hesitation. A central thread of the season is his relationships: his complicated dynamic with Cuddy, his repeatedly strained friendship with Wilson, and his ambiguous feelings for Stacy. At the same time, he keeps bullying his team with unsettling skill and sharp intelligence. The medical cases are often particularly strange and striking: a teenage supermodel revealed to have pseudohermaphroditism and testicular cancer, a case of deliberate gold sodium thiomalate poisoning by a patient’s wife, and Foreman coming terrifyingly close to death in a two-episode arc involving induced legionellosis and primary amoebic meningoencephalitis caused by Naegleria fowleri. The season culminates in House being shot, leading to a powerful episode where the boundary between reality and hallucination becomes increasingly blurred. Disturbing, fascinating – and always interesting.
