After Matthew’s sudden death, Mary finds it hard to come to terms with her grief while being courted by several charming suitors. She gradually starts to take charge of the estate with Tom. Meanwhile, Edith begins a romantic relationship with journalist Michael Gregson. He disappears after travelling to Germany, and Edith realises she is pregnant. Anna is raped by Lord Gillingham’s valet, Mr Green, who later dies after being hit by a car in London. Cora’s new maid, Baxter, who replaces O’Brien, arrives with secrets, and Thomas continues his scheming. Rose’s romances bring youthful energy and scandal, and the series culminates in her debutante ball in London, which brings the Crawleys and their world into contact with the modern changes of the 1920s.
