This is the story of a child who loses his mother at birth and inherits his father’s deformity—eyes positioned on the sides of his head. His father keeps him hidden and hopes to have him surgically “corrected,” but the child refuses, determined instead to live as normal a life as possible. The graphic novel is both strange and striking: its characters are unusual, yet its black-and-white, pencil-like drawings are beautifully delicate. It explores the idea of normality and what it means to exist in a society that pressures individuals to conform and not stand out. A moving story, and a true pleasure to look at.
