This Ted series goes briefly through the basic knowledge of sleep science. We learn about the different sleep phases, the effect of caffeine and alcohol on our sleep patterns, the effect of the lack of sleep on our memories, our emotions and our immune system and more alarmingly on the increased susceptibility to Alzheimer’s disease. Finally, six tips for a better night are provided. The series also offers to read the book by Matt Walker, “Why We Sleep: Unlocking the Power of Sleep and Dreams”. Short videos, simply and nicely illustrated that give a glimpse into the amazing science of sleep, this underestimated super-power.

“It turns out that there’s something good happens when you get your sleep back. And sleep, particularly rapid eye movement sleep, actually offers a form of emotional first aid. Because it’s during sleep at night that we take these difficult emotional experiences that we’ve been having during the day, and that sleep acts almost like a nocturnal soothing balm, taking the sharp edges off those difficult experiences. And so perhaps it’s not time that heals all wounds, it’s time during sleep that provides that form of emotional convalescence. So that when we come back the next day, we’re able to cope with those emotional memories.”
