This series starts from the day after the Titanic sinks on the 14th of April 1912 to the outbreak of the First World War on the 4th of August 1914. The main thread of these episodes is about the male heir of the Grantham estate, who, after the death of close cousins on the Titanic, is a distant male cousin, Matthew Crawley. In parallel, Mary, the elder daughter of the Earl of Grantham, Robert Crawley, is struggling to find a decent husband. In the luxurious rooms of Downton Abbey between the three Crawley daughters and in the basement between the housemaids, scandals and intrigues unfold. The stage is set for the rest of the series, characters established, with their intricate relationships, and the societal backdrop against which their lives unfold. It took me years to start watching this series, but I am on a roll now and thoroughly enjoying it.

– Don’t be ridiculous.
– I am not being ridiculous. No Englishman would dream of dying in someone else’s house. Especially someone they didn’t even know. “
– O Granny, even the English aren’t in control of everything.
– I hope we are in control of something, if only ourselves…”
