Is it essential to summarise this play ? Briefly, the story is set in the days before the wedding of Theseus and Hippolyta. Then there is Hermia that loves Lysander but has to get married to Demetrios that Helena loves. Oberon, king of the fairies, is annoyed against Titania, queen of the fairies. Finally, six players are planning to put on a play for the wedding. In the middle of all of this, add a magical juice that, when applied to a sleeping person’s eyelids, this person will fall in love with the first living thing they see. So many themes and interpretations surround this play: dreams, feminism, loss of individual identity, jealousy, even ambiguous sexuality. Let’s just say that it’s a beautiful story about the complexity of love.

“Love looks not with the eyes, but with the mind;
And therefore is wing’d Cupid painted blind:
Nor hath Love’s mind in any judgment taste;
Wings and no eyes figure unheedy haste:
And therefore is Love said to be a child,
Because in choice he is oft beguiled.”
