Maria Merryweather is 13 years old. She has lost her parents and has to go and live with her older cousin, Sir Benjamin Merryweather. He lives in Moonacre Manor somewhere on the West side. She slowly discovers that this place is full of secrets and family tragedies. Through her stubbornness and some resilience, she will bring together all the lost souls, with the help of several animals, such as Wrolf, called a dog but inded a lion and Zachariah, a cat capable of writing messages in ashes. A children’s story that made reminded me of Alice in Wonderland or Narnia. A little lengthy but a cute story.

“Have no fear, young mistress,” came Marmaduke’s voice soothingly behind her. “There is enough. There is sufficient plum cake, saffron cake, cherry cake, iced fairy cakes, eclairs, gingerbread, meringues, syllabub, almond fingers, rock cakes, chocolate cakes, parkin, cream horns, Devonshire splits, Cornish pasty, jam sandwiches, lemon curd sandwiches, lettuce sandwiches, cinnamon toast and honey toast to feed twenty and more. Have no fear, young mistress; when Marmaduke Scarlet is cook there is always enough.”
