Guan Hongying is found dead in a canal. The inquiry is given to chief inspector Chen Cao. This is a delicate case because Guan was a national model worker. Chen, however, discovers that she lived a double life, being the lover of the married son of a high-ranked communist party figure, Wu Xiaoming, that killed her because she was blackmailing him. Chen is determined to catch the culprit, even at the cost of his career. An insight into the politics of the People’s Republic of China during the early 1990s.
